Garden & Animals

This year’s gardens promise to be spectacular. I know, I say that every year, but this year I really mean it! The 2 front beds are complete: the first one on the left of the front walk is a flower bed composed of a  mixture of perennials & annuals. The peony bush is just shooting up & I can’t wait for the flowers to open.

The first vegetable bed is on the right of the front walk and has peas, lettuce, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage & tomatoes in it. Last year I shared too much with the rabbits so this year I put up a chicken wire fence before I planted anything. So far, so good…

I started a Memorial Garden on the driveway side of the dog run to commemorate the lady who lived in this house for 50 years. She died just before we bought the house & was, by all accounts, quite a character. She has come back to visit a  couple of times, I think to be sure that we are taking good care of the house. I haven’t “seen” or felt her lately so I think she’s satisfied. Ever since we moved in almost 2 years ago I’ve been wanting to do this garden for her, with some old fashioned flowers. So when the local nursery had a good sale a few weeks ago, I bought some giant phlox, foxgloves & delphiniums to put in that bed.

As soon as the bush on that side of the house is dug out I’ll plant some more. But I have to wait for  someone else to do it as I am violently allergic to whatever it is, despite long sleeves, long pants & gloves covering every inch. Hopefully next week-end it will be dug out.

The sunny perennial garden, well that’s been pretty neglected so far this year. It does seem to have a fine crop of thistles growing & while I love thistle I do not want them choking out my other plants. So as soon as the rain lets up I’ll have to go weeding out there.

Finally, the second vegetable bed needs to be dug. I have plans to put in beans, zucchini, pumpkins & a few assorted other things in there. But I need to move the mulch pile & put up another chicken wire fence…too much to do is a familiar tug at this time of year between the studio & the gardens…
